However, obtaining a French driving license proves to be compulsory in some cases:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Any person residing in France and holder of a driving license <strong>issued by a EU country\u00a0<\/strong>may drive during the period of validity of the latter, but shall exchange it for a French driving license in the event of <strong>traffic violation\u00a0<\/strong>leading to a loss of points, any restriction, suspension or cancellation of the driving license. This is also applicable <strong>when applying for a new category of driving license<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Any person residing in France and holder of a driving license <strong>issued by a non-EU country <\/strong>may drive in France over a period of one year maximum upon their arrival in France.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Beyond that time-limit, either they must have applied for <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.itama-mobility.com\/en\/exchange-of-a-foreign-drivers-license\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the exchange of their driving license<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>for a French one \u2013 provided that bilateral agreements so allow \u2013 or\u00a0<strong>have<\/strong><strong>taken the French driving test<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>Exchanging a foreign driving license for a French one<\/h2>\n<p>The file consisting of the application for the exchange of a driving license obtained in the EU <strong>shall be sent by only post mail\u00a0<\/strong>to the French <em>Centre d\u2019expertise et de ressources de titres<\/em>(CERT) or to the <em>Centre de ressources des \u00e9changes de permis de conduire \u00e9trangers et des permis internationaux de conduite<\/em>(Crepic) if it is in Paris.<\/p>\n<p>For more information, please visit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.service-public.fr\/particuliers\/vosdroits\/F1758?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the concerning webpage of the French <em>Service Public\u00a0<\/em>website.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>When the driving license has been delivered by a non-EU country, the application has to be filed <strong>with the competent prefecture\u00a0<\/strong>(French Administrative center) of the petitioner\u2019s place of residence (in some French departments, with the sous-prefecture).<\/p>\n<p>You may find all the necessary information on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.service-public.fr\/particuliers\/vosdroits\/F1460?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the French <em>Service Public\u00a0<\/em>website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Warning: it is only when the country where the driving license has been issued <strong>has reached a reciprocity agreement\u00a0<\/strong>with France that the exchange process may only be allowed, and the application file must have been filed by the end of the first year of residency in France.<\/p>\n<h2>Obtaining a French driving license<\/h2>\n<p>When the driving license is non-exchangeable, one must take the French driving test.<\/p>\n<p>The test consists of a <strong>theoretical <\/strong>(the \u201c<em>Code de la Route<\/em>\u201d available online or in bookstores) and a <strong>practical part<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The theoretical part needs to be passed in the first place. The practical part may be taken within the 5 following years. That one lasts 25 minutes and takes place under normal trafficking conditions and since March 2015, it also consists of a \u201cBasic First Aid\u201d part.<\/p>\n<p>During those 2 stages of the test, you may be assisted by an interpreter.<\/p>\n<p>The results are then issued within the 48 hours following the exam, either by email or post mail. When passed, a certificate of achievement (\u201c<em>attestation de r\u00e9ussite d\u2019examen<\/em>\u201d) is provided pending acquiring the official driving license which is usually issued within the 4 following months. If no traffic violation is committed within 3 years, the driving license may then be credited with 12 points.<\/p>\n<p>Warning\u00a0: in case of failure and while their <em>Code de la route\u00a0<\/em>is still valid, one has the right to 5 attempts. However, it usually takes about several months before being able to retake the test.
